There are currently two forms of memberships (Silver and Gold). Platinum is reserved for VIP players as well as administrators / moderators and have an unlimited expiry period. Further credits are never wasted, you are able to transfer (or register) your credits to another person within your empire at any time. Each subscription will last for approximately 2 - 3 months before expiring.
